Whirlpool Galaxy (M51)

Whirlpool Galaxy and nearby bright star. Nearly 4 hours of data on this one under Bortle 2/3 skies with moderate smoke and some loss of transparency. Still overall, the longer exposure time and dark skies really brings out the detail. First time confident enough to run unattended overnight. Including an unattended meridian flip.

The “bright” star is HD117815, which according to Stellarium and Wikipedia is a pulsating star about 30 light years from us. For comparison, M51 is about 25 million light years away. The visually closest named star to M51 is Alkaid, the bottom star of the handle of the big dipper.
