In 2014 I built a new reprap 3d printer based upon an open source hardware design by Joseph Prusa called a BoxFrame Prusa i3.
This was done completely from parts, no kit and included many of my own minor mods and variations.
The wooden box that is the frame for the printer. Vertical rails for the x axis and a print bed that moves in the y direction under the arch of the frame.

Below is a picture after a few years with some minor upgrades, including a camera and light bar (yellow structure on the left attached to the frame), and a raspberry pi for controller in the red and green box on the right with a touchscreen.
